PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Funded by the Government of British Columbia, the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research is the provincial support agency for health research in BC. The team’s responsibility is to create a digital space for the Michael Smith Foundation to demonstrate some of their researcher’s work throughout the years.
My Role:
Lead Developer
My Responsibilities:
* Web Development (HTML5)
* Video Integration
* Other R&D tasks
What I learned:
This was the first time for the team to work with HTML5. It was my responsibility to integrate the parallax effect, Raphaël JavaScript library and video backgrounds in HTML5. The Raphaël library was used so that it detects mouse click events around the shape of the triangles instead of the default rectangular shape. The videos are integrated in some of the parallax layers. They are controlled using JavaScript. The parallax itself was one of the biggest challenges on the tech side as the designers don’t get to see the scrolling/rolling effects until they are implemented. It was finally decided by the team that the none-video sections have three parallax layers and the video parallax sections have two layers. The team also ended up re-doing a lot of the structuring work to make sure that the parallax effects and the overall look and feel are efficient and user friendly even after the video integration.
